King Kamehameha Day

June 11th - Why do we celebrate?

King Kamehameha Day, celebrated on June 11th, honors Kamehameha the Great, the monarch who unified the Hawaiian Islands into a single kingdom in 1810. The holiday was established in 1872 by King Kamehameha V to commemorate his grandfather's achievements. Early celebrations included carnivals, fairs, and various races. Today, the day is marked by elaborate events such as floral parades, lei draping ceremonies, and traditional Hawaiian hula performances. The holiday is a significant cultural event in Hawaii, reflecting the deep respect and reverence for Kamehameha's legacy and his role in shaping the history of the islands.

King Kamehameha Day is a day of traditional festivities. Every year there is a ceremonial lei draping of the King Kamehameha statues, and an annual parade. This parade features pa’u – royal female horseback riders – who represent the 8 Hawaiian islands. After the parade, is a block party with food and music, known as a ho’olaule’a (which means celebration). These festivities serve as a tribute to Kamehameha, and act to protect, preserve, and perpetuate Hawaiian culture.

King Kamehameha the Great achieved several significant accomplishments during his reign:

  • Unification of the Hawaiian Islands: By 1810, Kamehameha had successfully unified all the Hawaiian Islands under his rule, establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii.
  • Establishment of the Kamehameha Dynasty: He founded the Kamehameha dynasty, which became the most enduring and well-documented line of Hawaiian rulers.
  • The Law of the Splintered Paddle (Kānāwai Māmalahoe): Kamehameha introduced this law to protect common people from the undue brutality of powerful chiefs, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Economic Development: He amassed a fortune for his kingdom through a government monopoly on the sandalwood trade and the imposition of port duties on visiting ships.
  • Diplomacy and Trade: Kamehameha navigated the tricky period of European discovery and exploration, maintaining Hawaiian independence while engaging in limited trade and diplomacy.
  •

Kamehameha's leadership and vision played a crucial role in shaping the history and culture of Hawaii.
