How Cattle Changed Retail

While Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been around for some time, it was the adoption of RFID into cattle farms that really accelerated the growth of the industry. With the introduction of RFID, cattle farmers were able to keep track of their herd and monitor location, feedings, medication, weight and even milk production. In addition, this led to easy farm to table tracking and the uses for RFID only expanded from there.

As RFID tags became cheaper and more durable and continued to change the way cattle ranches ran their farms, retailers began to take notice. The retail industry began to adopt RFID tags to help with inventory counts, loss prevention and even supply-chain traceability. For the same reason the cattle farmers adopted RFID, the retail industry was beginning to change their processes to include RFID at every corner. In the last couple years, the technology used in RFID tags has advanced significantly. The hardware improved, the software to read these RFID tags has been upgraded significantly, and the costs to implement an RFID system have dropped.

Today, RFID has been adopted into many faucets of retail such as, apparel, grocery, logistics, and pharmaceuticals. The traditional barcode will still be in use for many years to come but with RFID tags, you do not need visibility to the tag to read it - you can scan an entire store full of goods in just minutes and have an accurate inventory count. These RFID tags can be embedded in price tags, apparel labels, packaging, logistics labels or hangtags.

RFID labels are no longer optional. They’re the quiet infrastructure powering the next generation of retail — a world where inventory is accurate, supply chains are transparent, and customers get the seamless experiences they expect.

Retailers who embrace RFID labels now aren’t just improving operations. They’re building the retail ecosystem of the future.
