Parker Ranch

Parker Ranch Content Picture

Parker Ranch is the largest ranch in the Hawaiian islands, as well as one of the oldest ranches in the US. The ranch was founded in 1847 on the island of Hawaii in the Waimea community by John Palmer Parker. Parker assisted King Kamehameha I, in ridding the island of feral bulls. In return for his service King Kamehameha granted Parker the land that later became Parker Ranch. Founder John Parker married into the Hawaiian Royal Family and the history of the Parker family and the Hawaiian monarchy have been entwined ever since.

During WWII the ranch was used by the US Marine Corps for training in preparation for the attack on Iwo Jima. Today the ranch is managed by the Parker Rand Foundation which was created by Richard Smart, a sixth-generation descendant of John Parker. The trust has one purpose: the betterment of the Waimea community. The trust specifies that the income from the ranch will be used to support and improve the healthcare and education of the local community, as well as the ranch's charitable giving. Parker Ranch has grown over the years with the Waimea area and remains focused on sustainability as well as maintaining its traditions within a thriving community.

Paniolos (Hawaiian-style Cowboys) lead horseback riding and hunting activities on the ranch. Hiking and camping are also available. Thanks to the US Marine Corps there is also an annual traditional 4th of July Rodeo! The connections Parker Ranch has in Hawaii has made it an important part of Hawaiian culture, both past and present. Click here to learn more about Parker Ranch.
